Hobonichi Techo Cover: Kyohei Sakaguchi - Field Sky

Kyohei Sakaguchi has kept a plot in a community garden in Kumamoto since 2020, photographing what he passes on the way and working the photographs up in pastel. Field Sky is one of those, drawn in October 2021: a high autumn sky, pale blue and dry, with white cloud building and trees moving in the wind.

At arm's length it reads almost photographic. Close up you can see the powder of the pastel and the marks of a hand smudging it, which is why it is printed on a fine-grained polyester rather than something glossy. The lining is white faux leather chosen to resemble pastel paper, the bookmark is a cool grey, and a section of the picture carries onto the butterfly-stopper pen holder.
