Hobonichi Pencil Board: Akiko Miyakoshi

A pencil board slides under the page you are writing on. It gives the paper something firm to sit against, so it stops the pressure of your writing embossing itself into the sheet underneath. This set carries three paintings by picture book artist Akiko Miyakoshi, chosen so the board is worth looking at rather than merely functional. Her work is soft-edged and quiet, and holds light and shadow in a way that survives being printed small.

• Three sizes, one per techo: A6 for the Original, A5 for the Cousin, and a narrow one for the Weeks

• A6 is 155 x 103 mm (6.1 x 4.1 in), A5 is 215 x 147 mm (8.5 x 5.8 in), Weeks is 187 x 88 mm (7.4 x 3.5 in), all 0.4 mm thick

• Three different paintings, one per size, rather than one design scaled up and down

• Reverses coloured to the picture: yellow, navy and light blue

• A 1 mm scale printed down the long edge of the back, so it doubles as a ruler

• A Today tab on the corner, so it works as a bookmark while it sits in the book

• Yupo synthetic paper, 6 to 13 g depending on size, so it adds nothing to the book
