The Original is the book the whole Hobonichi range grew out of, a page a day at A6, which is paperback size and about as much techo as fits in one hand. It has been made every year since 2002, and the page design has been adjusted continuously across those editions rather than redrawn, which is why the grid sits where it does.
Each daily page carries a quote at the foot [in Japanese], chosen from Hobonichi's own writing, so the book reads as well as it writes. The Original ships as a bare book: it is meant to go inside a cover, and the whole Original-size cover range fits it.
