Hobonichi A5 Techo Cover: Yuichi Inoue - Jo

Yuichi Inoue spent his career pulling calligraphy away from its own conventions, working in ichijisho, single-character pieces made with a large brush on paper bigger than he was. Jo comes from his later years, and the cover gives the whole front to it: one character, going up.

It is silkscreened onto plain natural cotton rather than printed on a coated surface, which is what lets the brush actually read, down to the flecks thrown off at the end of a stroke. The outer pocket carries the credit, the character's reading and meaning set in a modern face against the calligraphy. Inside it turns ink black and sky blue, with a narrow bright blue bookmark showing when the cover is shut.
